How David Beckham made $300 million from the fine print

In 2007 the MLS (Major League Soccer, USA) signed David Beckham. They rewrote their salary cap and offered him $255 million for five years in the league.

Buried in the contract his agent added an option which gave him the right to buy an MLS franchise at a fixed $25 million once he finished playing. At the time it wasn’t worth it, newly added teams paid $10 million to join. But the league gained popularity and the prices surged. A few years later a team cost up to $500 million, so Beckham exercised his option and bought into Inter Miami. The league offered him $50 million to tear up the clause, but he declined. Inter Miami is worth around $1.45 billion today and his share of it is worth more than $300 million.

Takeaway

What we can learn from David's story is to always ask for something that isn't money, something that costs nothing today but could be worth a lot later.
Example. A brand hires you for a shoot. Ask to keep the raw photos or footage. It costs them nothing, they already paid for it, and you walk away with tons of content for your socials.

Sales Framework for Athletes

Listened to a podcast on sales the other day and they summed it up like this, right on topic:
“Sales is a lot like golf. You can make it so complicated it's impossible, or you can just walk up and hit the ball.”

Here is the sauce:

How to save money when travelling

Yes, this one's obvious, but download Revolut (worldwide) or Neon (Swiss only) if you haven't already.

Most athletes travel a lot, and your bank typically charges a solid 1.5 to 3% on top of the real exchange rate. A neobank gives you the actual rate, lets you hold multiple currencies in one place, and makes your expenses easy to manage.

Download Neon, enter code DKGQ0P and we both get 10 francs.

Download Revolut, email me via jeremy@nuverva.com and I'll send you my referral reward (between 30-80.-)

That's it. Talk soon ;)
